A multi-state electric provider, FirstEnergy manages power distribution throughout parts of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, including a 24,000-mile network of transmission lines. In recent years, FirstEnergy combined its Pennsylvania subsidiaries into a single company, known as FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA). Met-Ed still appears on customers\u2019 bills and retains its rate structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Met-Ed customers also benefit from the following services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bill pay assistance:<\/strong> Met-Ed helps customers experiencing financial hardship power their homes. The Pennsylvania Customer Assistance Program (PCAP) eliminates past-due balances, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) allocates a state-funded grant toward customers\u2019 heating and cooling bills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medical needs assistance:<\/strong> If at least one member of your household depends on life-sustaining equipment, the Critical Care Program keeps it powered. Customers are encouraged to reach out to Met-Ed to discuss their circumstances and develop a backup plan for outages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extended due date: <\/strong>Met-Ed understands the limitations of living on a fixed income. In turn, the company works with existing customers age 60 and up or who receive Social Security or disability to pay off outstanding balances rather than discontinue service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2023-consolidation\">2023 Consolidation<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>In 2023, FirstEnergy submitted a proposal to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PaPUC), requesting the consolidation of its Pennsylvania subsidiaries, including Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power. PaPUC approved this measure toward the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All companies are now part of the FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA). How does this change affect existing customers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Due to roughly a century of operation, all subsidiaries will continue to send bills and offer plans under their names.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FirstEnergy split its power generation operations from electricity distribution.
