About the Gexa BOGO Plan

For many years, Gexa stayed away from free electricity plans. While TXU, Reliant and Direct Energy promoted free weekends and free nights, Gexa put their own spin on it. They offered EveryDay | EveryNight pricing, with the same price for all hours of the day (essentially, rebranding their fixed rate plan).

Gexa started offering a unique free electricity plan in 2018, called the Gexa BOGO Plan. It’s buy one, get one. And that means you only pay for 50% of your energy charges, every month. For example, if you use 1,000 kWh in energy charges, you’ll only pay for 500 kWh.

The 50% discount on energy charges only applies to the energy charge per kilowatt hour. You will pay for 100% of your electricity delivery fees.

Note that the advertised price per kilowatt hour already includes the assumption of 50% off your energy charges. Do not make the mistake of assuming you can cut 50% off the total advertised price!

Is the Gexa BOGO Plan Right for Me?

We always emphasize how important it is to (1) understand your usage, and (2) read the Electricity Facts Label.  The Gexa BOGO Plan is no different.

The Gexa BOGO Plan is a good choice for customers in larger homes, using between 1000 – 2000 kWh per month.

And here’s why — there’s a monthly service fee or minimum use fee of $9.95 in any month where you use less than 999 kWh. When you take that into account, you can see that the rate per kWh is lower for higher usage. If you consistently use over 1000 kWh every month at your home, the Gexa BOGO Plan may be for you.

What if I’m Not Sure? The Happiness Guarantee

Here’s our favorite thing about Gexa Energy. Gexa has a Happiness Guarantee. So you can select the Gexa BOGO Plan even if you aren’t sure.

If you decide it’s not for you, just call Gexa within 60 days of your enrollment.

With the Happiness Guarantee, Gexa will let you switch to any other plan (or the same or longer term), with no early termination fee.

How Does Gexa BOGO Plan Compare to Other Gexa Plans?

The Gexa BOGO Plan is a great option if you want free electricity. But, one of their other plans may be a better fit for you.

Here’s a comparison of the price per kWh of the Gexa BOGO 24 Plan, vs. Gexa’s Saver Premium 12 Plan.

Keep in mind that the Gexa BOGO Plan has a $9.95 fee if you use under 999 kWh. The Saver Premium plan offers a $100 bill credit when your usage is 2000 kWh a month or higher.

As you can see in this analysis, the Gexa BOGO 24 plan is generally the way to go if you use between 500 – 2000 kWh a month.

Because of the $100 bill credit, the Saver Premium plan is the better deal if you use 2000+ kWh a month.

How to Compare Gexa BOGO Plan vs. Plans from Other REPs

Like we said above, the two most important things to know when shopping for electricity are:

  1. Know your usage
  2. Read the Electricity Facts Label.

Here’s why that’s important.

Know Your Usage.  It’s important to know your usage because it impacts your effective rate.  Your usage will be different month to month. And when folks guess their usage, they usually under or over estimate it. We recommend that you go online to your current account and download your usage history.

Read the Electricity Facts Label.  Once you know your usage, shopping is easy. You just need to review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). The EFL will show you the average price at three usage levels — 500, 1000 and 2000 kWh. Always review the EFL details for the plan you are considering.
