It’s a bill credit and tiered rate plan that’s great for consumers using 800-1300 kWh monthly. That’s what most Texas homes use. They’ve replaced it with a more complex plan called Free Nights and Cool Summer with a 25% summer discount that sounds great…but is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n TXU Energy Free Nights and Cool Summer is the latest free electricity offering from TXU. You’ll get free electricity every night from 9pm until 4:59am, plus a 25% discount on your daytime electricity in July, August and September. This deal will likely only be around for a month, so jump on it while it’s available!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Like any free nights electricity plan, the average rate for power makes certain assumptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In this case, the average price per kWh in the Electricity Facts Label assumes that you use 56.87% of your power between 9pm and 5am. TXU made that assumption based on how a typical home uses power. That means if you do little bit to shift your power usage, like run your dish washer and washing machine after 9pm? You’ll have a lower average rate vs. what’s advertised. But if you have someone working from home all day? This is not the plan for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The advertised price also assumes that you use 14% of your energy in June, July and August, and you get a 25% discount off your daytime energy during those summer months. Here’s the kicker: their math is wrong. The average home in Texas uses 40% of their power during those three months. So your effective rate will be lower than what they advertise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you can actively move your usage to the free time period, this may be worth it for your home. But we think this is an overly complex plan that is going to disappoint people with their actual effective rate each month, which won’t be anything like the advertised rate.
