Compare Electricity Rates in My Area
Can I get my power back on if I switch electricity providers?
If your power is currently out due to the weather emergency, switching electricity providers will not restore your power.
However, it’s a good time to check your bill. If you are on a variable rate with your current electricity provider you should shop for a new fixed rate electricity plan. Select the next available start date, based on the chart above.
Retailers may have incurred high energy costs during this extreme weather event. Historically, REPS attempt to recoup those costs by raising rates for variable rate customers.
I’m on a variable rate with my provider. What should I do now about my rate?
If your contract with your REP expired and you are on a month to month holdover rate, here’s what to do.
If you are on a variable rate, your electricity price for February was already set at the end of January. However, your price for March may be significantly higher. Check with your REP to find out what the variable rate will be for March, and find out their best renewal offer. Then make sure to shop online and compare electricity rates from multiple companies to get the best deal.
If you are on a market index rate and your electricity price is tied to natural gas or the real price of energy, call your REP and ask to be switched to a fixed rate plan immediately. You may be able to negotiate a discount on your bill if you agree to a new contract.
If you are with Griddy, and didn’t switch away at the beginning of the freeze, you will pay a very high price for the energy you have consumed. Tired of the roller coaster that goes along with wholesale energy? Shop for a fixed rate electricity plan.
