Met-Ed Electricity Rates – Energy Choice
Met-Ed is part of the Pennsylvania electricity choice program.
Under this program, you can shop for an electricity supplier for your home or business, or you can get your power from the utility that serves your home.
Regardless of who you choose for your electricity supply, the utility will still deliver the power to your home, respond in an emergency and send your bill.
But, when you select a Electric Generation Supplier (EGS), you typically can lock in a competitive rate that gives you price certainty for the term of the contract that you select.
Met-Ed’s Price to Compare rates change quarterly. The Price to Compare includes charges for: generation and transmission; PA’s Gross Receipts Tax; the utility’s charges for implementing the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards.

About Met-Ed
Med-Ed’s service area includes about 3,300 square miles in eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, where they deliver power to nearly 600,000 households and businesses.
Incorporated in 1894, Met-Ed is now a FirstEnergy subsidiary. A multi-state electric provider, FirstEnergy manages power distribution throughout parts of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, including a 24,000-mile network of transmission lines. In recent years, FirstEnergy combined its Pennsylvania subsidiaries into a single company, known as FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA). Met-Ed still appears on customers’ bills and retains its rate structure.
Met-Ed customers also benefit from the following services:
- Bill pay assistance: Met-Ed helps customers experiencing financial hardship power their homes. The Pennsylvania Customer Assistance Program (PCAP) eliminates past-due balances, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) allocates a state-funded grant toward customers’ heating and cooling bills.
- Medical needs assistance: If at least one member of your household depends on life-sustaining equipment, the Critical Care Program keeps it powered. Customers are encouraged to reach out to Met-Ed to discuss their circumstances and develop a backup plan for outages.
- Extended due date: Met-Ed understands the limitations of living on a fixed income. In turn, the company works with existing customers age 60 and up or who receive Social Security or disability to pay off outstanding balances rather than discontinue service.
2023 Consolidation
In 2023, FirstEnergy submitted a proposal to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PaPUC), requesting the consolidation of its Pennsylvania subsidiaries, including Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power. PaPUC approved this measure toward the end of the year.
All companies are now part of the FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA). How does this change affect existing customers?
- Due to roughly a century of operation, all subsidiaries will continue to send bills and offer plans under their names.
- FirstEnergy split its power generation operations from electricity distribution. All FE PA subsidiaries function as electric distributors, while the Keystone Appalachian Transmission Company (KATCo) preserves and maintains the grid.
- These changes should result in more savings with time and more efficient customer service.
- FirstEnergy also plans to increase the funds available for bill pay assistance.
