Penelec is part of Pennsylvania’s customer choice program. That’s the common name for electricity deregulation in PA.

You can get your electricity supply from your utility. Or you can shop for a PA electricity supplier licensed by the PA Public Utility Commission.

No matter who who you buy power from, Penelec continues to deliver the electricity to your home, respond in an emergency and send your bill.

If you choose the Penelec to supply your electricity, you’ll pay their Price to Compare. And your price will change quarterly.

Or you can shop for a competitive supplier with offers like the rates you see here. You can lock in a fixed rate and have price certainty for the term of your contract.

Electric Generation Suppliers can often give you a rate that’s lower than the current price to compare. And you can lock in that rate for a contract length term that you select. That’s why it pays to shop and save on your electricity bill.

    About Penelec

Penelec delivers power to about 588,000 customers in parts of northern and central Pennsylvania, covering a 17,600-square-mile area.

Penelec began in Philipsburg, Pa., providing power to 16 customers within a two-mile radius. By 1919, multiple local electric companies across Erie, Warren, Huntingdon, Lewistown, Bedford, Punxsutawney, Towanda and Oil City decided to consolidate into the Penn Public Service Corporation, which moved its headquarters to Johnstown, PA.

The company continued to grow, acquiring 20 more local electric providers within the next 10 years. During this period, it also built a longer power line that connected its station on the Clarion River to the West Penn Power Company’s facilities and joined a transmission network extending from Boston to Chicago.

By 1927, the company changed its name to the Pennsylvania Electric Company, shortened to Penelec, and became part of General Public Utilities following World War II. General Public Utilities merged with FirstEnergy Corp. at the start of the 21st century.

    FirstEnergy’s Pennsylvania Consolidation

Serving about six million customers across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, FirstEnergy oversees about 24,000 miles of transmission lines and 269,000 miles of distribution lines. In 2023, the company proposed consolidating its four Pennsylvania subsidiaries, including Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power, and received approval from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission that year.

The subsidiaries now operate as the FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA) but retain their more familiar names and rate structures. FirstEnergy, meanwhile, plans to shift grid and asset management to the Keystone Appalachian Transmission Company to devote its resources and funds to power delivery.

This consolidation won’t immediately affect customers but, in the long term, could:

    • Gradually lower rates.
    • Improve Penelec’s customer service.
    • Result in more regular grid upgrades.
    • Increase the amount of bill assistance available.
