Most customers in Texas choose a 12-month electricity plan, according to electricity shopping statistics. If that sounds like you, we’ve made it easy with this round up of the best 12-month electricity rates in each area of Texas.
Comparing Fixed Rate Electricity Plans – Basic Fixed is Best
We recommend basic fixed rate plans to our friends and family, and that’s what’s highlighted below. A basic fixed rate plan doesn’t include any bill credits, tiered rates or free electricity. But it will give you a reliable and consistent rate no matter how much power you use.
You’ll often see cheaper prices when you first scroll through electricity rates. But those are tiered rate and bill credit plans, designed to look cheap at a specific usage level. We include them because a lot of people prefer these plans (despite everything we say!). You can shop for bill credit plans, but make sure to shop based on your usage, and read our 1-line descriptions of each plan to understand if it’s a good fit for your usage range.

What to Look for When Shopping for a 12-Month Electricity Rate
Everyone wants the cheapest electricity plan, right? Here are things other than rate to consider when shopping for your 12-month electricity contract.
- Shop based on usage. Shop based on your average electricity usage vs. 500/1000/2000 kWh. This will give you the most accurate view.
- Focus on fixed. Basic fixed rate electricity plans are best for just about everyone. Unless you know your usage is a good fit for a bill credit or tiered rate plan, avoid these options.
- Review the details. Check the plan details section where we highlight key elements like whether there’s a monthly base charge or a bill credit for ebill/auto-pay.
- Check the ETF. For a one year contract, most Early Termination Fees are $150. Some electricity companies offer a variable termination fee of $15-$20 per month remaining in the contract.
- Review their flexibility. Is there a satisfaction guarantee? Some companies let you change plans or switch away with no ETF if you find a better rate.
Our final tip? While you’re shopping, don’t restrict yourself to just 12-month contracts. While that may be what you traditionally look for, check to see if you can get a great deal on a short-term vs. long-term contract. A 6-month electricity plan may be a better option, especially if you’re shopping in the fall.
