Ohio Edison History

Ohio Edison was incorporated in 1930 by The Commonwealth and Southern Corporation to merge five smaller Ohio utilities, the oldest of which dated back to the mid 19th century. In 1944, Ohio Edison acquired Pennsylvania Power Company and in 1950 Ohio Edison merged with Ohio Public Service Company and continued its expansion under the Ohio Edison name. In 1967, Ohio Edison joined forces with Cleveland Electric Illuminating (CEIC), Duquesne Light Company, and Toledo Edison to form Central Area Power Coordination Group (CAPCO) to share in construction and operation of large scale regional electricity generating units.

Ohio Edison (formerly NYSE: OEC) merged with Centerior in 1997 to form FirstEnergy and is one of three FirstEnergy utilities in Ohio (others are The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison).

Utility Highlights

With a customer-first approach and a low regional pollution profile, Ohio Edison has worked hard to maintain and evolve as a leading electric utility. Here a few ways Ohio Edison makes it easy for electric utility customers in Ohio:

  • Online self-service tools. Whether you’re starting service, stopping service, viewing their outage map, need to report a tree problem, lighting problem or simply need electrical work, there’s a tool for that on Ohio Edison’s website. Unlike many utility companies that have very basic websites and require long hold times for simple requests, Ohio Edison respects its customers’ time and uses technology to speed up basic requests.
  • Simple ways to save energy. The Ohio Edison website is packed with ideas for saving energy, as well as incentive programs like the Easy Cool Rewards program that helps utility customers get free programmable thermostats to help lower their electricity bills. Their home energy analyzer can give electricity customers even more tips for reducing electricity usage.
  • Online electricity safety training. No matter how long you’ve had electricity services, there’s probably more you could know about electrical safety. Downed power lines, electrical fires and electrical accidents are uncommon, but when they happen it’s important to be prepared—and Ohio Edison wants to be sure its customers are armed with all the right knowledge.

Switching to a CRES for Your Supply

If you have Ohio Edison for your electricity supplier, you will be served on the Standard Service Offer rate. This rate can change quarterly based on Ohio Edison’s procurement of power.

Or, you can switch to a Competitive Retail Electricity Supplier, or CRES. A CRES can offer you alternative plans that have secure fixed electricity rates for the duration of your contract term. Longer term contracts, such as 24 or 36 months, usually offer the best bet at electricity rate savings versus the utility.
