About the TXU Energy Season Pass Plan
TXU Energy was one of the first retail energy providers to offer free electricity plans. Over the years they have offered Free Pass (free electricity for your 7 highest usage days), Free Nights & Solar Days, and now Ultimate Season Pass.
Season Pass is easy to understand. You’ll get 50% off your electricity during the seasons when you use the most power — June through August and December through February.
Plus (and this is what makes it Ultimate Season Pass) you’ll get 100% credit for your three highest-temperature days each month from June to September.
Keep in mind these things with Season Pass:
- While you get a 50% discount on your Summer and Winter energy charges, your energy charges during the Spring and Fall are higher than you would pay on other plans.
- You will pay a TXU Energy base fee of $9.95 each month, plus the full delivery charges each month.
- The average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) displayed on the EFL already includes a 50% discount assumption during 6 months of the year. The average price per kWh also includes an assumption on how much energy the average home uses on their 3 highest temperature days.

TXU Energy’s Season Pass average rate is calculated assuming 50% of your electricity usage will be in the Summer and Winter, and 50% of your electricity usage will be in the Spring and Fall.
And there is where the opportunity lies.
Because that’s not how people actually use power.
If you are like most consumers in Texas, you use more of your power in the Summer and Winter than you do in the Spring and Fall.
Here’s how a typical residential customer uses power in Texas, versus what TXU Energy assumes in their EFL calculation.
Here’s the takeaway.
- TXU Energy’s average price per kWh assumes consumers use 50% of their power during the discounted months.
- Real Texas electricity consumers use more like 53-56% of their power during the discounted months.
- Therefore, we think your average price per kWh over the course of the year could be better than what TXU Energy advertises.
The Free Hottest Days that gives you 100% free energy on the 3 hottest days in June – September is also a simple math assumption. They just assume that 3 free days out of 30 days in a month is 10%. Their Electricity Facts Label calculation assumes that you use the same amount of power ever day. And we all know that isn’t true! You will use more power on the three hottest days of the month, because you will be cooling your home on full blast. That’s another reason why we think your average price could be better than what TXU advertises.
As with any plan like this, you really need to look at your usage to decide if TXU Energy Season Pass is worth it.

TXU Energy’s Season Pass plan is priced similarly to other time-of-use plans out there. It’s a good deal if you want free electricity and can shift some of your energy consumption to your highest usage days. But for the cheapest TXU Energy plan? That’s the Saver’s Discount Plan. It’s the best TXU Energy Plan for average Texas electricity customers that use between 1250 – 3000 kWh monthly.
