The Reliant Energy Truly Free Weekends Plan gives you 100 days of free power per year.

Weekend usage from 8pm Friday to 12am Monday morning is free for both electricity charges and delivery charges, for every kilowatt hour you use! The plan does still pass through 100% of your fixed monthly delivery charge (around $5 to $10 a month depending on where you live).

Plus, Reliant Energy automatically upgrades you to their Make it Solar plan. It’s basically like having solar energy for your home without the panels on your roof. Reliant will purchase solar renewable energy certificates to match 100% of your electricity usage. You’ll get your two highest usage days each week for free. That gives you 8 free electricity days every month. You don’t have to worry about shifting your electricity usage. Reliant automatically makes the adjustment for free power. This gives you the ultimate flexibility for your electricity usage.

In calculating the average price per kilowatt hour, your electricity and delivery charges are both $0 for 2 full days of the week. During the rest of the time, you’ll pay a fixed price per kWh for your electricity, with delivery charges passed through. How to Compare Reliant Energy Truly Free Weekends Plan vs. Plans from Other REPs

Here’s why that’s important.

Know Your Usage.  It’s important to know your usage because it impacts your effective rate.  Your usage will be different month to month. And when folks guess their usage, they usually under or over estimate it. We recommend that you go online to your current account and download your usage history.

Read the Electricity Facts Label.  Once you know your usage, shopping is easy. You just need to review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). The EFL will show you the energy rate, the current utility delivery rate, and the average price at three usage levels — 500, 1000 and 2000 kWh. Always review the EFL details for the plan you are considering.

Shop for the Energy Rate. In Texas, the energy rate is the competitive rate. The TDSP fees (poles & wires charge) from your utility, like Oncor or CenterPoint are set by the Public Utilities Commission of Texas and will be the same regardless of who supplies your electricity.

How to Make the Most of Free Electricity

Free electricity plans depend on consumer behavior to make it work. In this case, Reliant is assuming that 32% of usage will be on the weekends. The weekday price for this plan is higher compared to other basic plans. That ensures that Reliant Energy will cover their weekend electricity costs and the delivery fees.

You can bet that the “typical” customer in Texas uses power exactly like this — 32% of power used during the weekend. If you don’t make any changes in how you use energy, your average price per kilowatt hour will be around what they show on the Electricity Facts Label.

So in order for you to get the best deal with free electricity, you want to shift more of your electricity usage to the free time period.
