How BillSmart Calculator Works
Finding the right electricity plan isn’t magic. It’s math.
Since 2017, our PlanScan™ algorithm has calculated the true cost of thousands of Texas electricity plans. We account for usage tiers, fees, and bill credits that the advertised rate doesn’t easily reveal. BillSmart Calculator puts that same calculation in your hands, so you can see what you’ll really pay.
You’ll find the this tool in the Plan Details for each plan. This video shows you where to locate it.
BillSmart Calculator functionality is available in three places on ElectricityPlans:
1) Plan Details. The primary home for the BillSmart Calculator. Enter your usage to see how the plan’s effective rate and estimated bill change.
2) Filters/Monthly kWh Usage. Enter your usage under Filters and show every plan’s effective rate.
3) Compare Plans. Select up to three plans to compare side by side. Enter your usage to see how each plan’s effective rate and estimated bill change.
🔌Pro Shopping Tip: Have at least one bill? Use the BillSmart Low Bill Finder. Enter a single bill and we’ll estimate your month-by-month usage using ERCOT residential usage patterns, then show effective rates based on what you actually use.
Who BillSmart Calculator is For:
BillSmart Calculator is for anyone who wants to dig into the details of what you’ll pay each month under each plan. Calculator is for you if you want to:
- Shop all plans based on your average usage. Enter a single number when you start shopping, and you’ll see all plans at your effective rate.
- See what you’ll pay for each month of the year. Select a plan, open Plan Details and enter your usage in the BillSmart Calculator. You’ll see the effective rate and estimated bill. Repeat that process for each month.
- Compare what you’ll pay across three plans using the Compare Plans tool. Select three plans, enter your usage and see your effective rate and estimated bill from each one.
