CostCurve™ Shows Your Effective Rate at Every Usage Level

See what you’ll actually pay, before you sign up.

Advertised rates don’t always tell the whole story, especially with Texas’ 500/1000/2000 kWh pricing tiers. The rate you see isn’t always the rate you pay. CostCurve is an interactive graph that shows your effective electricity rate (what you’ll actually pay) at every usage level.

How CostCurve Works

Over the years, our PlanScan™ algorithm has calculated the true cost of thousands of Texas electricity plans. We account for usage tiers, fees, and bill credits that the advertised rate doesn’t easily reveal. CostCurve puts that same calculation into a single interactive graph. With CostCurve, simply slide along the graph to see your effective rate. The video below shows this feature in action.

🔌Pro Shopping Tip: Have at least one bill? Use the BillSmart™ Low Bill Finder. Enter a single bill and we’ll estimate your month-by-month usage based on ERCOT residential usage patterns and show effective rates based on what you actually use.

Who CostCurve is For:

CostCurve is for anyone that wants to see exactly what you’ll pay, mapped out in an interactive graph. It’s for you if you:

  • Want a quick read of what you’ll actually pay at every usage level.
  • Prefer visuals over tables and numbers.
  • Trust your eyes more than your math.

Interpreting CostCurve Graphs

You can see at a glance what kind of price predictability you’re in for.

Fixed Rate Plan

Your effective rate only changes because of the monthly charge from the TDU (and the REP base charge, if applicable).

Bill Credit Plan

Your effective rate is a lot different that the advertised price. Bill credit plans are good for some usage levels, but only if you know where to look.

Complex Plan

The more complicated the rate structure, the less predictable your bill will be. But if you know your usage is in that sweet spot, you can get a deal.

What’s the sweet spot of pricing for a bill credit electricity plan?

The sweet spot can easily be seen on a CostCurve. The lowest price you see is the start of the sweet spot of usage. Then follow the curve upwards to see where your effective rate is the same as a regular fixed rate electricity plan. That is the end of the sweet spot usage. Typically, bill credit plans can be cost effective if you always use between 1000 and 1500 kWh monthly, but always check the curve!

Where do I find the CostCurve?

Every plan on the Electricity Plans site has a CostCurve, to help you decide if it’s right for you. Select a plan, then click Plan Details. You’ll find CostCurve, BillSmart Calculator and BillSmart Plan Score.
