About the TXU Energy Free Pass Plan
TXU Energy was one of the first retail energy providers to offer free electricity plans. Over the years they have offered Season Pass (50% off electricity in Winter and Summer), Free Nights & Solar Days, and now Free Pass.
The TXU Energy Free Pass Plan is easy to understand. Use your power as you always do. Use it at night, use it on the weekends, use it however you want. And then in the summer months (June, July, August and September), you get your 9 highest kWh usage for free. The rest of the year you get your 7 highest kWh usage days for free.
And we’re not talking just electricity for free. You get both your electricity and your delivery charges (price per kilowatt hour) for free.
Keep in mind three things with this plan:
- Your electricity and delivery (price per kilowatt hour) charges are free for your 9 highest kWh usage days in June, July, August and September.
- Your electricity and delivery (price per kilowatt hour) charges are free your 7 highest kWh usage days the rest of the year.
- You will pay a TXU Energy base fee of $9.95 each month and you will pay the full monthly fee for your utility delivery each month.
- Advertised pricing assumes that you will use 36.9% of your power during your 9 highest usage days and 34.7% of your power during your 7 highest usage days. (We’ll get into that last item more below.)
How to Make the Most of Free Electricity
Free electricity plans depend on consumer behavior to make pricing work for the retailer and the consumer. This plan is no different.
TXU Energy has lots and lots of math brain power. Let’s call them “quant jocks.” These quant jocks looked at 3 years of data for TXU’s 3 million+ residential customers.
And what they found is that on average, the typical consumer uses 34.7% of their electricity each month during their 7 highest usage days and 36.9% of their electricity for the summer’s 9 highest usage days.
Let’s be clear here. Not 33%. Not 36%. Exactly 34.7% and 36.9%, depending on the number of days and months involved.
If they are that exact, and went to all that work doing math, we’re giving it to you straight: You are probably average. You are probably going to use power just like the typical consumer.
And if you do, you are going to pay the average price per kilowatt hour that’s shown in the electricity facts label.
TIP: If you don’t make any changes in how you use energy, your average price per kilowatt hour will be around what TXU Energy shows on the Electricity Facts Label.
The reality is, 9 free days of electricity in the summer is awesome. And 7 free days the rest of the year is pretty awesome too. It’s fabulous! It’s fantastic! But to make the most of this free electricity, you need to be aware of your usage.
Based on our review, we think this plan is a great plan for consumers who travel for work and are only home during the weekends. It’s also a great plan for a second home where you are only there 2-3 weekends a month.
It can be a great plan for families too. Just don’t go crazy. Don’t think, “Hey kids, leave the fridge open, crank the A/C and open the windows! Use as much power as we want, our highest 7 days are free.” Be energy conscious and conservative. Then blow it out on the weekends and special family events!
Is TXU Free Pass Plan Right for Me?
We always emphasize how important it is to (1) understand your usage, and (2) read the Electricity Facts Label. That’s important with the TXU Free Pass Plan too.
The TXU Energy Free Pass Plan is best for customers with higher usage. The pricing below shows the average price per kilowatt hour at different usage levels, assuming that you use 36.9% of your electricity during your nine highest summer usage days and 34.7% on your seven highest usage days the rest of the year.
But like we said, if you use electricity wisely, you could make better use of the free power than the average consumer.
How Does TXU Free Pass Compare to TXU Energy’s Other Plans?
TXU Energy’s Free Pass plan is priced similarly to other time-of-use plans out there, including TXU’s Free Nights & Solar Days and Season Pass plans. It’s a good deal if you want free electricity, and a great deal if you can shift some of your energy consumption, like laundry and dishwashing, to your highest usage days. Free electricity plans are best for people who can easily work those small adjustments into their schedule.
Be sure to check out TXU’s Saver’s Discount plan, especially if your average monthly kWh usage is over 1250 kWh. And, it’s TXU Energy’s cheapest electricity plan.
