What’s the difference between CPL Retail Energy and Corpus Power & Light?

When Texas deregulated in 2001, Corpus Power & Light split into two companies. CPL Retail Energy became your electricity supplier if you didn’t shop for a new electricity company. And your utility company, which handles the poles and wires and reads your meter, became AEP Texas Central.

CPL Retail Energy stopped serving customers in January 2021, when it was acquired by NRG. All remaining customers of CPL Retail Energy were transferred to Reliant Energy, but you can choose any of the retail electricity providers for your electricity.
