Garland Electricity Choice - Compare Rates, Plans and Providers

  • Written By: Rebecca Bridges

  • If you live in Garland Texas, you may have electricity choice as part of deregulated electricity in Texas. Or you may not. It all depends on where you live. That’s because approximately 85% of Garland customers are served by Garland’s municipal electric utility, Garland Power & Light. The other 15% are in the Oncor utility area and must choose an electricity provider.

    Deregulated Electricity in Garland: Oncor

If you live in a part of Garland that is deregulated, Oncor is your utility company. They manage the poles and wires in your area, deliver power to your home, read the meter and respond in any emergencies. However, they don’t sell electricity to you. You’ll need to pick an electricity provider and shop for an electricity plan to get electricity at your home.

First, let’s confirm if you have electricity choice, based on your address. Enter your address below to see if your address in Garland is deregulated. If you have Oncor, we’ll show your address and plan options. If you have Garland, it will return “address not found.”

The Basics: How to Choose an Electricity Provider

Here are the basics on how to select an electricity provider for your home.

    • Shop based on your usage. Advertised rates can be misleading. They show usage at 500, 1000 or 2000 kWh a month. But if you use a different amount than that, your average price will vary from the promoted electricity price.
    • Pick your type of plan. There are a lot of different electricity plan types including fixed rate, variable rate, bill credit and free electricity plans. We recommend basic fixed rate plans, which charge the same energy price per kWh regardless of usage.
    • Read the details. Your electricity plan is your rate, term, termination fee and type of plan. Be sure to consider all these items, not just the price per kWh. Read the fine print, and remember the more complicated the plan the less likely it is to save you money.
