    August 2025 Arlington Electricity Rates

How to Find the Cheapest Electricity in Arlington

The biggest confusion over electricity shopping is understanding what you’ll actually pay. Rates are shown at 500, 1000 or 2000 kWh, in an attempt to make it easy to compare. But that’s not what you’ll actually pay. If you use more or less than that, you’ll pay a different average price.

With Electricity Plans, you can shop based on your average electricity usage, to see what you’ll pay. That’s the only way to compare rates accurately.

    Time needed: 10 minutes

How to shop for electricity rates in Arlington

    1. Search electricity rates by zip code

    2. Enter your monthly usage.

Entering your monthly usage quickly brings the cheapest electricity plans to the top of the list. Our shopping tool defaults to 1000 kWh a month. The average home in Arlington uses 1,125 kWh per month.

    3. Sort results by “Price: Low to High.”

With any online shopping, it’s best to shop by low to high to find the cheapest price.

    4. Select type of plan you’re looking for.

Just like you can filter for size or features when shopping online, you can pick features for your electricity plan, like bill credit plans or free electricity. We recommend basic fixed rate electricity plans to our friends and family for their simplicity and gimmick-free pricing.

    5. Pick the cheapest electricity rate for your usage.

Once you have entered your zip code and usage, you can see what you pay for each rate, both the price per kWh and the energy bill. Select your plan and complete the enrollment

What are Electricity Companies in Arlington?

There are two types of electric companies in Arlington. One is the utility company that delivers power to your home and manages the infrastructure. The other is a retail electricity provider (REP) that you purchase power from.

    Arlington Utility Company – Oncor

The local Dallas utility company for electricity is Oncor. They deliver power to your home, read the meter, manage local power lines and respond to electrical emergencies and outages. But you must choose an energy company in Dallas to provide your electricity. You’ll have a choice in electricity provider, rate and plan.

How to Set Up Electricity Service in Arlington (Move-In)

To start electricity service in your new home you will need to select an electricity provider and sign up for service, selecting your move-in date to start service.

If you’re moving from out of state, choosing an electricity provider may all be new to you. You’ll shop on line and compare electricity rates. Your local utility, Oncor, will deliver the power to your home no matter who you choose.

We recommend picking a basic fixed rate electricity plan for your home. This will charge you the same price per kWh for every unit of power, with no tiered rates or bill credits. Once you’ve been in your home for a while, you’ll be able to better evaluate other options based on usage.

Once you’ve picked your plan, enroll online or on the phone and select “move-in” for type of service. For those checklist people among us, you can set up electricity up to 60 days in advance to get it off your to-do list. Forgot to set up service and need power in a hurry? You can get same day electricity.

Moving within the greater DFW area? If you currently have Oncor as your utility company, you can take your electricity plan with you as a transfer of service. Or if rates have fallen since you last shopped, you can cancel your current service with no early termination fee, just by providing a forwarding address for your final bill.

How (and why) to Switch Electricity Providers in Arlington

When your contract is about to expire, your electricity provider will contact you with a renewal offer. We recommend you shop around before taking the renewal offer. After all, electricity providers usually save their best rates for new customers. There’s very little reward for loyalty.

Switching is easy to do and takes less than 10 minutes to complete your enrollment. There’s no need to contact your old provider. Your new energy company takes care of everything!

Here are tips to help you find the best rate when you switch electricity companies:

    • Shop based on your usage. Don’t look at the advertised rate (usually at 1000 or 2000) and think that’s what you’ll pay. Shop with your usage to see your estimated bill amount and rate.
    • Shop ahead of time. Don’t wait until your contact has expired before you shop. In fact, if your contract expires in the summer months, we recommend you start shopping 60 days ahead of time. Just remember to pick a start date equal to your expiration date.
    • Select a basic fixed rate plan. With all the different types of plans offering bill credits, tiered rates and free power, it’s easy to get confused. Based on the thousands of bills we’ve reviewed, basic fixed rate plans are the best option for almost everyone.
    • Evaluate all parts of the electricity plan. Most only look at the rate. But you should also consider the term, termination fee and type of plan.
